Molly goes to Camp

Oceanside, CA, April 4, 2023, – Ron Dryer, OYC Jr. Director and the OYC Juniors announce the selection of Molly Brown, to be awarded a grant from the OYC Youth Foundation to attend the Catalina Island Camp, at Howland’s Landing, this summer.

The Catalina Island Camp, founded in 1922, provides kids with the opportunity to make new friends, take time out from technology, and enjoy outdoor activities that include swimming, hiking, sailing, kayaking, snorkeling and stand-up paddle boarding.

“Molly, is an active member of the OYC Junior Learn-To-Sail program, and has demonstrated dedication, determination, enthusiasm and skill in her sailing endeavors. “We wish her the very best!” Ron said.

Molly is a fifth grader and began sailing at the OYC youth summer Learn-To-Sail program in 2021 after watching the kids in the harbor sailing their boats. She describes her experience as being “hooked” from day one.

Her parents report that she loves the instructors, the independence of sailing and pushing herself to learn a new sport. She continued sailing in fall and spring classes and began racing in the Thirsty Thursday series last fall. She participated in RS Tera Regattas at OYC and throughout the region. Besides camp, she will be traveling with her parents to Italy later this summer to race in the RS Tera world championships.

The grant is provided by the OYC Youth Foundation as part of their Maritime Adventures Program for youth. Michael Cobas, President of the OYCYF said, “We feel that the Catalina Island Camp is an outstanding example of a fun and unique outdoor experience with it’s mission of cultivating respect for self, others, and the environment. It was selected for it’s long running and outstanding reputation” He added, “It is always such a pleasure to work with the Oceanside Yacht Club in their endeavors to provide meaningful experiences to young sailors.”
